review: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

transformers2

Initially, it’s a passable sequel to the enjoyable 2007 film. Then it turns into a turgid, bloated, tedious, boring, embarrassing, blank-stare-inducing, ethically ignorant, narratively bankrupt, jingoistic, anti-intellectual, racist, sexist piece of masturbatory trash.

Fuck this movie.

I dunno man. I mean, I went in expecting minimal story, very little human element, and shitloads of robot fighting… that’s what the movie was. that’s all I wanted from it. Is it a good movie? No fucking way. Is it what I hoped it would be? Hells fucking yes. Enterfuckingtaining by any standards.

And that’s fair. I was expecting that to. What bothered me to the most were the blatantly racist twin robots Skids and Mudflap. From there, the movie just spriraled down for me. In the first hour, I was having a really good time. By the end I just wanted to never see it again.

I have to agree with you on the overtly racist robots. They shouldn’t have existed, but even in a world where they do (exist) they definitely shouldn’t have gotten that much screen time.

I agree with you almost completely. I’d like to say that I’ll never watch it again, but in reality if it’s on some lazy afternoon when I’m on the couch, it’ll probably happen.

    …..wait for the Blu-Ray?

I would say don’t even watch it. There are parts of it that are fun like the first movie (which, admittedly, had its own problems), but the movie seems premised on the fact that Michael Bay assumes that people who see this movie are as stupid as he is.

Just google around for “Skids and Mudflap” and you’ll see what I mean.

I love how uppity people get when you don’t adhere to what they think you should think. Especially when it’s over as something as incredibly important as a movie.

Damn you for having standards and a differing opinion!

That was mature. this movie was for entertainment you knew this was what it was for you shouldn’t have gone to this movie in the first place you’re just another in the shit stack of people who think they got it all figured out.

Oh my god. You know what? After carefully reading your comment, you’ve completely changed my mind. Shown me the light like Saul on the road to Damascus. Of course it’s only for entertainment purposes! That completely absolves it from any sort of critical analysis or even thought in toto! How could I have been so dumb to walk into the movie with standards, demanding relatable, complex characters and an engrossing plot! How stupid could I be to expect the filmmakers to not be actively racist and sexist! I’ve been so mislead. Thank you, akner. Thank you from the bottom of my now empty skull.

Just want to point out the humor of calling him mature after initiating the fuck conversation. Everyone had a giggle? Good.

To be honest, I think what you described the movie as is exactly what the goal was. This isn’t Faulkner, and intellectual depth isn’t the intent. Frankly, if it were, it would alienate the vast majority of the audience. Understanding anything of any subtlety is a difficult task, and most people consider themselves to have better things to do than actually think about their sources of entertainment.

From that viewpoint, looking for any sort of themes or message in a movie about fighting robots is just as tedious and masturbatory as you accuse the movie of being.

I’m not saying Transformers 2 is a good movie. I haven’t even seen it yet (though I have to assume it can’t be far from the first). I’m just saying that the movie is a relatively cheap way to profit off nostalgic children of the early 90s who suddenly find themselves flush with disposable income. I dare say that everyone involved with the movie was exactly this cynical about what they were doing, and hoping or expecting anything better is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Where did he say he was expecting anything out of the movie? Just calling it what it was.

Thank you Eli…and joe direct quote are you ready?

“How could I have been so dumb to walk into the movie with standards, demanding relatable, complex characters and an engrossing plot! How stupid could I be to expect the filmmakers to not be actively racist and sexist! I’ve been so mislead”.

This Benjamin went in expecting this right? Complex Characters are you kidding me? Lets look at the original review. You used these words to describe an intergalactic robot movie? My masturbatory friend you need to re evaluate the genre of movie you are interested in cause you won’t get all of those things you “demand” out of any movie like this.

and don’t waste your time writing reviews like this if you don’t want people talking to you like you’re an idiot

Akner, if I have to choose between demanding more out of my movies beyond the traditional accepted (and imaginary) constraints of their genres and complacently lapping up the shit that Hollywood routinely shovels in our faces, I’ll choose demanding more every time. You’re right, I certainly would have been less upset about the movie had my expectations been lower, but the bare fact that you seem to have such low expectations when it comes to your stories signals to me that you’re the exact audience that this movie was trying to ring money out of. Congratulations.

And I’m really glad you stooped to calling me an idiot; it really shows me that you’re ready to have a grown-up conversation about a movie.

All Im saying is it seems like your review was posted because you had too. If I’m going to take the time to read reviews I want to read something that is worth it instead of reading a bunch of shit. take the time to tell me why you feel that way. And there had to be things you liked about the movie…heck venture out and say those things too. And don’t keep using your smart ass rhetoric to try to put me down its not working.

Simple put: this is not for you. I do not believe this post was made because anyone had to (or “too”). I believe this post was made by because someone wanted to express their opinion about something they felt was a demeaning turd-bucket of a movie.
If you’re going to take the time to read a review, you want it to be what you are looking for. This was not it.
The flaw in the situation comes when you expect someone else to really give a shit. This is in fact the internet, after all, with an open door policy. If this isn’t the review your looking for, find another one, if you need. Some people look for reviews to back up a viewpoint they have, some to see a contrary opinion, some to ‘be informed’. I think this particular review does a fairly good job summing up this one viewer’s experience. Luckily, that is all it seeks to accomplish.

This movie is what Charles Barkley would refer to as “Turrible”. Take the time to point out its many gaping plot holes and the various other problems it represented? Fuck that and fuck this movie. To para-borrow(?) a phrase -Best sentence to be read in the voice the the Late Don LaFontaine- “Garbage has sunk to a new low.”
